Origin: Chinese, Indian, southern Japan, Taiwan


Height/width: 4-6' x 3-5'


Culture: Coastal full sun or part-shade. Dry shade tolerant. Likes heat. Seaside okay. Likes acidic soil, sandy soil. Clay soil, poor soil okay. Regular to low water. (Can become weedy if over-irrigated.) Can take wet soil. Drought tolerant. Hardy to 20-25°F. Subtropical.


Description: Pleated lanceolate leaves. Little green flowers. Deadhead flowers to stop reseeding. ​Grain is a substitute for rice. Used as a vegetable crop in Papua New Guinea. Rhizomatous. Tough. Tropical look, water feature, massed, erosion control, container, informal hedge, background, median strip.
